Good-bye 2011

Well 2011 is coming to a close today. It has been a year with highs and lows, but overall we have been blessed by God. My top 3 memories from 2011:

-Family memory - taking our family down to Minneapolis for a vacation and going to Mall of America, the science museum, the children's museum and many other fun places.

-Personal memory - our amateur soccer team, "The Bridge," took first place in the Duluth Amateur Soccer League this summer with an overall record of 11-2-1.

-Youth group memory- our 2011 retreat, "Clean Slate." There were so many amazing memories from this retreat, and overall we could feel and see God moving in our students. It was a great weekend.

I hope you all had a great 2011 and look forward to seeing what God has in store for 2012. If you want to share a memory from 2011 or a goal/resolution for 2012 - please do so in the comments.

Have a happy new year!

We wish you a Merry Christmas! I hope that everyone in our youth group has a great Christmas. Remember the reason that we celebrate Christmas is the birth of Jesus Christ. Be bold for him this season!

JR HIGH and AMP Christmas party

Just wanted to remind everyone that this Wednesday night is our JR HIGH and AMP Christmas Party. Come on out for a fun night of games and treats.

Also, if you are in senior high you are invited to come and watch a special Christmas DVD - "The Star of Bethlehem." It is a video giving proof for how Christmas was an astronomical event that proves God and the Bible's truths through scientific research. The video will show in the sanctuary and is for all adults and students 9th grade and up.

Hope to see any of you on Wednesday. And don't forget to come at 6pm for dinner!

Hail to the Chiefs!

Well after a long, long many weeks - we are finally changing the colors of the blog. Our promise was to keep it Packers colors until the Packers lost - which happened this afternoon.

It was a hard fought game but in the end the Kansas City Chiefs beat the Green Bay Packers - so here's to the Chiefs!

Don't worry Packer fans - you're still the Super Bowl favorites!

Senior High Christmas Party & Gift Exchange

Sunday night at 6:30pm is our Senior High Youth Group Christmas Party. We will have treats and games.

If you plan on coming please bring a wrapped "white elephant" gift to exchange. A "white elephant" gift is anything from your house that you don't really use that someone else might be able to use. It can really be anything you want. If you absolutely can't bring a gift, still come because we should have extra gifts. We want you to be there. And it will be lots of fun.

Hope to see you Sunday night. 6:30pm-8:00pm.

Bayside Youth Retreat is in exactly 3 months!

That's right. Our 2012 Bayside youth retreat is exactly 3 months from today. It will be March 9th-11th. At Storybook Lodge in Gilbert, MN. The theme will be "Hide and Seek." Cost is $60. You must have a 2012 permission slip on file to attend. And your friends are welcome. You will be able to start registering and signing up after the new year.

As we get closer to the retreat, I will be posting great moments and memories from retreat past. Make a comment and share if you have any, or email me and maybe your memory can be profiled on the blog!

The above logo was from our 2007 winter retreat. The theme was "Where Are You?" and it was held March 9-11, 2007. It was an excellent retreat as we had 36 students attend and our speakers were Michelle Tunell, Scott Paulson, and me. We still had ASAPH leading us in worship and there were some very powerful moments during our sessions. My greatest memory is the senior class that was attending their last retreat. It included Justin Tunell and Shane McCotter playing in the worship band. Grant Leach and Justin Stetzer hiding in trees during the night games. Adam Johnson dominating in dodge ball. Allyse Tunell must have been there too. Dani Love, were you even there?????? Either way the class of 2007 left a lasting impression on our youth group and was an awesome group of seniors. Thanks for the memories!

So if you were at this retreat, what do you remember?

Tom the Potato

Jon Lindberg won the quiz for the second week in a row

Last night was great. If you weren't at senior high youth group you really missed out. We had a lot of fun, there were some crazy moments, and we had great conversations revolving around the message of the night. Here are some highlights:

-We watched the tail end of the Packers game that came down to the last play. The Packers won by kicking a field goal with no time remaining. Thus, the blog colors remain green and gold.

-We had a quiz on female actresses. Jon Lindberg won for the second week in a row! Can he make it three in a row next week? He will certainly have some tough competition because the subject is Alpacas - my guess if Falyn McCotter is going to be in contention!

-The message was "Making a Difference in Your World." We followed that up with some great discussion during our small group times.

-We played a variation of capture the flag - we had several winners and several that were relegated to the "Vestibule of Shame."

-We were visited by Tom the Potato. If you missed it, I hear he will be back next Sunday night. So don't miss it!

See you then!

So take a moment and vote for your favorite youth group event of 2011. We want to know what you liked best!

Senior High Youth Group

We had lots of fun last night at Senior High Youth Group. The night was filled with plenty of activity - we helped bring down all the church Christmas decorations from the attic, we had a quiz on Marvel comic book characters, we had lots of cookies, AND we had a scavenger hunt. A very competitive scavenger hunt. Broken plates, spilled lemonade, flying signs and Bibles - you name it. But lots of fun!

The most important thing to remember from the night is our theme and message. DON'T WASTE YOUR LIFE! Are you being changed by God's message to you this school year? Are you wasting your life in any way? Are you fulfilling God's purpose for creating you? Remember - you were created to bring God glory.

How are you doing that?

Just a challenge for this week as you go about your daily lives...

Thank You

Tis the season for Thanksgiving. It is the week of Thanksgiving and we all have much to be thankful for. The thing that comes to mind that I have to say I am thankful for is YOU - the students at Bayside.

I want to thank you for being so willing to serve.

Last Wednesday night we had our Harvest Home Celebration and many of you (about 30 or so) came out to help serve. We had students cutting pie, taking plates to tables, and running the drink carts. It was a fun time and would not have been the same without each of you! So thank you.

And last Saturday we had our annual Bayside Bountiful Boutique. We needed several students to help run the kitchen cafe as a fundraiser for our missions teams. And we had about 10-11 of you show up and help out. It was amazing and fun! Thank you to all the students who gave up most of their Saturday to help us in the kitchen. All for a good cause!

Time and again the students of Bayside step up and serve. And that is one thing that I am thankful for this season.

We had lots of fun last night at youth group. If you weren't there here is what you missed:

-FRENCH BREAD PIZZAS! Yum!

-AMP students went to Target to buy items for shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child. Cool!

-In JR HIGH we talked about Philippians 2:13 and how God gives us the WILL and ABILITY to live for him and accomplish his purpose.

-We had a quiz on MATH! (take note SR HIGH students - same one is coming on Sunday! Study, study!)

-We played a very competitive game of sideline soccer - in which the winning team came back from 3 goals down to win 6-5!

-And we played dodge ball!!!!!

Hope to see you there next time!

Younker's Community Day

I want to throw out an opportunity for students in 9th-12th grade. Each year our youth group participates in Younker's Community Day. It is a national fundraiser that brings money into our community as well as brings money into our youth group. All we do is sell coupons for $5 to anyone and everyone that will buy one. All of the money goes to our youth group. The coupons actually are worth $10 in cash at Younker's on Community Day. This fall Community Day is this Saturday, November 12. We have 2 opportunities to sell coupons at the store to make money for our youth group.

All you have to do is show up at Younkers, sit at a table and hang out with other students from Bayside youth group, and ask customers if they would like to buy a $10 coupon for $5. If you are interested please contact me as soon as possible via facebook or my cell phone. We have 2 opportunities to sell that we need help with:

-This Wednesday, November 9, from 6pm-8pm

-This Saturday, November 12, from 10am-noon

Let me know asap if you would like to help!
Thanks!

Skit Night

Last night we had 'skit night' at senior high youth group. We took verses that we have been talking about at youth group and acted them out in real life skits. There were three groups - the freshman, the sophomores, and the upperclassmen. While the upperclassmen had an advantage of costumes, they struggled with their performance (Olivia!) The freshman did a nice job with their auction. But it was the Class of 2014 - the sophomores - who were the shining stars with their rendition of a bus ride sermon led by Jon Lindberg! Fun night!

As we have been talking about the meaning and purpose in life during our youth group devotionals, I hope that you have thought about how important your place is in your school. Can you make a difference?

So yesterday we started a new series in our JR HIGH youth group called "You can make a difference." We will be talking all year long about how students can make a difference in this world. We are going to give opportunities, help train and equip you, and support you in any way we can to help you guys make a difference in YOUR world.

So that leads me to this question. A question for all the students in our youth group, whether you are in JR HIGH, AMP, or SR HIGH. Can you make a difference? Make a comment on this post and tell us how you can make a difference in this world. It can be anything, something small or something big. Our challenge to the JR HIGH group this week was to find 1 thing you can do to make a difference this week. So I now make that challenge to anyone in youth group. What is 1 thing you can do to make a difference this week?

another epic soccer match

Tonight at senior high youth group we had a great time. First of all the last couple weeks of senior high youth group we have had many more students than in recent weeks. That has been awesome. I think we are gaining some momentum heading into the new school year! Here's what else we did tonight:

-quiz on Tom and Sarah (won by Zakk)
-talk on Fearing God
-carpet ball
-Falyn and Hailey had to wave their hands during the entire game time to exempt themselves from playing the actual game
-Rachel's name was changed to Frances for the night
-we had another epic soccer match

While our soccer match on Wednesday night during junior high was one for the ages, this game tonight was pretty good too. It started off pretty slow, but eventually everyone started to get involved. Jim and Olivia were standout goalies, Matt and Aaron seemed to dominate with tons of goals, but it was Becca Tunell (pictured above with Julianna at the retreat) who scored the game winner on a penalty kick. Nice shot. The final score was 7-6.

It was a fun night and I looked forward to senior high youth group next Sunday night!

what you missed - epic soccer match

Last night we had a lot of fun at junior high youth group. Here is what you missed:

-we talked about conquering fear
-we had a quiz about TV families
-heard about Lakefest and a free concert for Seventh Day Slumber on August 6th at Barker's Island
-we had an epic soccer game!

Now normally when we play games it's always fun but not everybody participates and sometimes a few people stand around. This was not the case last night. Everybody played and played hard! It was so much fun to watch! The game had two superstars - Nathan Tunell and Michael Johnson led the way for their respective teams. (Both are pictured above in a picture taken during VBS week) Michael's team was winning 9-6 and we were playing to 10. But Nathan's team made a furious comeback scoring 4 straight goals to win the game. This was topped off by Nathan with the game winning goal! Great game everyone!

Hope you all had fun. Hope to see more of you here next week.

Pray for Ukraine!

Just a reminder to everyone to pray for our mission team in Ukraine. They are on day 5 of 13 for this trip. Pray for their time in the villages and that God would speak boldly through them. The three students who are on this trip are Philip McCotter, Luke Tunell, and Falyn McCotter. Pray also for Phil and Ruth McCotter who are leading the team. Pray for unity, clear communication, and God's power to be with them!

what you missed last night

Last night we had a lot of fun at youth group. While many of you were gone because of Sonshine Music Festival or other reasons - we still had a blast. Here's what you missed:

-carpet ball
-a scavenger hunt
-talking about the race of life and winning the prize
-duck, duck, goose!

Seriously, we played duck, duck, goose. Normally Big Tom and Grant take care of games. But Tom got a new job and hasn't been able to come on Wednesday nights, so Grant has been doing games this summer. Well last night Grant had to work late, so the closest relation to Grant was Katie Johnson (pictured above - apparently she doesn't like her picture taken!). So Katie chose to play this classic game of duck and goose! It was fun.

Plus the scavenger hunt was really cool. We missed you if you weren't there.

And just to remind everyone, we will continue to have junior high youth group every Wednesday night throughout the summer!

Summer of fear

Fear. Everyone has some kind of fear. From death, to spiders, to heights, to deep waters. We all have fears. This summer in youth group we will be talking about fear. Our goal is to help you overcome your fears, to realize that God is in control, and to fight back against your fear! We will be covering several different topics within the overall theme of fear - at both junior and senior high youth group. My hope is that at the end of the summer you won't have any fears - or that you have fears but you know how to face them and conquer them!

So leave a comment on this post letting us know what you fear. What are you really afraid of?

what have you been missing

This last week in our youth group has been amazing. Hopefully you have been here at some point because we have had some really cool things happening. Here's a recap:

-A week ago on Wednesday night we had a campus missionary year-end celebration. There were several adults from our church at youth group and we had a prayer time for every student to pray with an adult. It was very powerful and moving!

-Last Friday night was Girls and Guys Night Out! It was a blast. I still don't even know what the girls did! The guys played football and video games. And some were lucky enough to go out to Dairy Queen. Then we all had a bonfire together with the girls. And there were SMORES! It was a lot of fun and we had 45 students out for this event. Thanks everyone who came and made it a great night!

-On Sunday we had some great conversation in our Senior High small groups. We started our summer series on FEAR and got the ball rolling with a lot of good thoughts and ideas on our fears. We also had a quiz and an intense game of kickball (students vs. youth leaders) in which the students won.

-And last night at Wednesday night JR HIGH youth group we had a blast helping with the games for Vacation Bible School. I want to thank everyone who was there and so willing to help. We played Bin Ball Tag, Dodge Ball Line Up, and had relays. It was a great time.

I hope you all are enjoying the beginning of summer, even if the weather doesn't feel like it. Remember we will keep having youth group throughout the summer. Senior High on Sunday nights and Junior High on Wednesday nights.

Hope to see you there. You don't want to miss out - because you never know what we might be up to!

The last night of AMP

Tonight is the last night of AMP for this school year. This was the first year we had AMP for 5th and 6th graders and it was a great success! However, if you are finishing 6th grade we are inviting you to join us for JR HIGH youth group this summer - beginning next Wednesday, June 1. So this summer we will have 6th-8th grade JR HIGH youth group. And then next fall we will have our transition to new groups.
