Bayside Bowl VI Results

We had another amazing Bayside Bowl on Sunday. The weather was perfect as it was a sunny day, no wind, 18 degrees, and we had some snow on the ground! We had the most students ever at a Bayside Bowl and the most to ever play in the football tournament! We also had dodge ball, soccer, video games, air hockey, foosball and many other indoor games. AND we had amazing home made pizza, cupcakes, brownies, and pop! What a great day! Thanks to everyone who came and enjoyed our sixth annual Bayside Bowl. Here is the report from the football tournament:

Zakk Attack - 4th place overall

Once again I am amazed that every year we have such good competition and close games. This year was the closest the tournament has ever been. All four teams could have won the Bayside Bowl. There were three tie games in the first round. And once again the championship game came down to the last play!

Green Giants - 3rd Place overall

In the first round each of the four teams played the other teams once. Here are the results:

Team Extreme - 8
Stars - 8

Green Giants - 8
Zakk Attack - 8

Team Extreme - 13
Zakk Attack - 13

Green Giants - 7
Stars - 6

Green Giants - 14
Team Extreme - 0

Stars - 15
Zakk Attack - 13

After the first round we determined playoff seeds based on these standings:
1. Green Giants 2-0-1 (+15)
2. Stars 1-1-1 (+1)
3. Zakk Attack 0-2-1 (-2)
4. Team Extreme 0-2-1 (-14)

Stars - Runners Up and 2nd place overall

In the playoffs it was Green Giants vs. Team Extreme and Stars vs. Zakk Attack. Team Extreme pulled off the upset as they beat the Green Giants 14-12 after stopping a late 2-point conversion. In the other game the Stars dominated Zakk Attack and easily won 24-0. The championship would be Team Extreme vs. Stars.

In the championship both teams played great defense. The Stars scored first and converted for an 8-0 lead. Team Extreme came back to score and convert to tie the game at 8-8 with little time remaining. The game would go into overtime and both teams scored and took the free extra point in the first overtime to make the game 15-15. To start the second overtime, Team Extreme scored again and chose to take the free extra point for a 22-15 lead. The Stars scored on their possession but chose to go for 2 points and win the game. However, Team Extreme made the tackle at the goal line and left the Stars 1 yard short of victory. Team Extreme won 22-21 in 2 overtimes! Members of Team Extreme were Mike Casper, Casey Canfield, Noah DiPuma, Tina Lurndal, Philip McCotter and Max McKenzie. Mike Casper was selected as the most valuable player. In the tournament Mike had 4 touchdown passes, 2 touchdown catches, a touchdown run and an interception returned for a touchdown. Great job Mike!

Team Extreme - CHAMPIONS and 1st place overall

Some other highlights included Grant Hanson scoring the most touchdown catches with 5. Nathan Tunell and Bryan Gibson were right behind him with 4 each. Scott Paulson had the most touchdown passes with 8, Kyle Casper had 6, and Zakk Grandahl had 5. We also had lots of girls play this year, which made it all the more awesome. Tina Lurndal became the second girl to ever win the Bayside Bowl. Last year Megan Tunell won and was the MVP.

Overall it was a great event. Hope you all enjoyed it. For more pictures check out our Facebook page. Thanks to Morgan Peterson who took all the pictures!!!

Bayside Bowl VI is this coming Sunday!!!

2011 Bayside Bowl Champions - Team Sparky

Excitement is building as our 6th annual Bayside Bowl is approaching. This coming Sunday, January 29th, from 3pm-6pm. We will have the annual football tournament, games in the youth room, and games in the fellowship hall. This will include video games, foosball, air hockey, ping pong and much more. We will also have FOOD! It is going to be a blast! All students in 5th-12th grade are welcome to join us. ANYONE is welcome to join the football tournament. We will split the teams up evenly and have a great, fun, and competitive tournament.

For a little history lesson - here is a look back at our Bayside Bowl. This includes results, champions, MVPs and fun facts:

In 2007 we started a tradition in our youth group with the Bayside Bowl. It started as an event for our youth to come and hang out on a day off from school. But now it has evolved into one of our biggest annual events. We have had many students and adults participate in the Bayside Bowl. Every year has been different but it always is a lot of fun. And every year the championship game has come down to the final plays.

Bayside Bowl I was on February 8, 2007. We had 3 teams battling for the new Bayside Bowl trophy. (The trophy was either a bowl or flower vase that I picked up from Goodwill for a total of 75 cents! But just imagine what it is worth now!) On that day the temperature was 13 degrees and there was very little amounts of snow. In the championship game the Nation of Domination defeated Well Oiled Machine by a score of 42-37. Well Oiled Machine had taken the lead on a touchdown and 2 point conversion with about 1 minute to go. However, the Nation scored on a long touchdown pass to win the game late. Tommy Casper was voted the Most Valuable Player.

Bayside Bowl II was on February 7, 2008. This year there were 4 teams participating, there was much more snow, and the temperature was 20 degrees. Both the defending champions Nation of Domination and Well Oiled Machine were returning. It was Well Oiled Machine that absolutely dominated the first round of games, winning all three games by a combined score of 53-0! They met up in the championship with the Nation of Domination once again. And it was another classic. The game ended up tied at 28-28. In overtime the Well Oiled Machine stopped the Nation on the first possession and then scored a touchdown to win 34-28. Tyler Tollefson was voted the Most Valuable Player.

Bayside Bowl III was on February 12, 2009. We had the most teams ever participating as 5 teams played on a day that was cold and icy. There was minimal snow and the temperature was 15 degrees. This year there were no first round games as it ended up being a double elimination tournament. Once again the Well Oiled Machine dominated play and earned its way back into the championship game, this time against the Saints. It was a close game but the Well Oiled Machine held the lead throughout the game. The Saints scored a late touchdown but failed the 2 point conversion and the Well Oiled Machine hung on to win 26-25. Tommy Casper was voted the Most Valuable Player in a losing effort as the Saints quarterback.

Bayside Bowl IV was on January 30, 2010. It was the first time the event was held on a Saturday. The temperature was 13 degrees and there was a small amount of snow. There were 4 teams competing and it marked the return of the Nation of Domination. In the first round the Nation returned with style, winning all three games. Once again they faced off against the Well Oiled Machine in the championship game. The Nation led throughout the game and held off a late comeback by the 2 time defending champions to win the game 36-32. Tommy Casper was once again voted as the Most Valuable Player.

Bayside Bowl V was held January 29, 2011. Once again it was a Saturday afternoon, this time there was plenty of snow (about 15 inches) and the temp was 25 degrees. We had three teams competing for the coveted Bayside Bowl trophy. In the championship game Team Sparky defeated The Terminators 22-21 with a two-point conversion after a late touchdown. Megan Tunell became the first ever female winner of the Bayside Bowl AND was voted as the Most Valuable Player.

Bayside Bowl Champions:
I-Nation of Domination
II-Well Oiled Machine
III-Well Oiled Machine
IV-Nation of Domination
V-Team Sparky

Bayside Bowl MVPs:
I-Tommy Casper
II-Tyler Tollefson
III-Tommy Casper
IV-Tommy Casper
V-Megan Tunell

Bayside Bowl fun facts:
-Grant Leach is the only 3 time winner of the Bayside Bowl
-Luke Tunell and Erick Tunell are the only 2 people who have played in every Bayside Bowl
-Megan Tunell is the only girl to ever win the Bayside Bowl
-there have only been 3 undefeated teams in the Bayisde Bowl - Well Oiled Machine did it twice (08 and 09) and Nation of Domination did it once (2010)
-the most points scored in one game at the Bayside Bowl was in the very first championship when the Nation of Domination defeated Well Oiled Machine 42-37
-there have been 2 overtime games - the championship of Bayside Bowl II and the semi-finals of Bayside Bowl III
-there have been 2 tied games - both games involved the same team (Lord's Army) during Bayside Bowl II
-the lowest scoring game in Bayside Bowl history was a 7-0 victory in Bayside Bowl IV for the Nation of Domination over the defending champion Well Oiled Machine

Hope to see you this Sunday for Bayside Bowl VI

New Carpet Ball Champion

We have yet to announce the completion of our 2011 Bayside youth group carpet ball tournament. Although the tournament didn't finish until 2012 - we have a new champion:

Nathan Tunell is Bayside youth group's 2011 Carpet Ball Champion. Nathan continues a line of champions from the Tunell family. In fact, this is the 5th straight year we have had a Tunell win the championship. Nathan is pictured here with his brother, Erick, who was the 2010 champion. Another interesting fact is the last 4 champions have come from the same household! And if you include last year's Bayside Bowl MVP from that household - that's a lot of hardware!

Nathan easily defeated Cody Casper in a two-week championship match by a score of 5-1. It was his fifth straight victory in the tournament - the most ever in the history of our prestigious carpet ball tournament. His closest match came in an exciting 5-4 victory during the quarterfinals against Michael Johnson.

Congrats Nathan! You're the champion! Get ready to defend the title because in a few months the winter will subside and we will start up the 2012 tournament!

12 in 2012

For 2012 I decided that I am going to attempt to accomplish 12 goals or challenges from our youth group. On Sunday night at Senior High youth group I will be speaking about God-honoring goals. Our encouragement to all the students will be to find and accomplish God-honoring goals in 2012.

With that I will also give a challenge to the students of Bayside youth group to help me come up with my 12 goals or challenges for 2012. Some will be God-honoring goals, some will just be for fun - but no matter what they will be a challenge. I will take all the suggestions from this Sunday and create a full list of 12 goals that I will attempt to accomplish this year.

One God-honoring goal that I am already attempting is to read the entire Bible in 90 days. Another fun challenge that a former youth group student gave me was to grow out a mustache and keep it for a week. Just a couple ideas to get your minds thinking...

If you have any suggestions, make a comment on this post and I will put it up for consideration.

The Star of Bethlehem

Tonight at youth group we watched an amazing video called "The Star of Bethlehem." It is a really spectacular documentary about God's amazing plan for us, Earth, Jesus, salvation, heaven, etc.

In the video it talks about the stars and how the Bible and science work together to show some amazing truths in the sky regarding the birth and death of Jesus Christ. I would highly recommend this video. If you were there or have seen it, please make a comment about your thoughts on this film.

Indescribable

Tonight at youth group we watched a video called "Indescribable." It is a message given by a guy named Louie Giglio. He is an author, speaker and musician. He has written many worship songs that you probably know. In the video he talks about how awesome and amazing God is, which we all know and believe to be true.

He begins talking about the stars, galaxies and the universe. And how BIG they are. And how SMALL that makes us - meaning us here on Earth. He shows a lot of really cool pictures of stars, galaxies and space that just blow your mind. The neat thing was how he ended his talk.

It all led to the picture above. This is a picture from the Hubble Telescope of "X structure" at the core of Whirlpool Galaxy. This picture is of the center of the Whirlpool Galaxy some 23 + 4 million light years away from Earth.

Our God is pretty big. Our God is pretty cool.
