Merry Christmas?

Today is Boxing Day!!! That's right, Boxing Day.  It's not normally observed in the USA but around the world it is very popular on the day after Christmas to celebrate Boxing Day.  The only reason I know this is because I used to live in Canada and my brother's birthday is today.

So...how was your Christmas?  Did you get what you wanted?  To you give some good gifts?  Did you remember the REAL reason that we celebrate Christmas?

Hope you all had a great day!

And don't forget, 5 days until the New Year's Eve Lock-In!

Throwback Thursday - PT edition

So for awhile now I have been posting "Throwback Thursday" pictures of several students.  These pictures have been from our youth group archives and have shown how little some of you once were - or sometimes how different you once were.

Well a few of you have been asking me to post a throwback picture of me.  So I found one where I had hair - and it's blonde!  Yep, that's me on the left.  And then my friends Jake, Ryan and Travis.  This picture was actually taken in Duluth for Jake's wedding back in 2000.  Only 13 years ago!

How do you like my hair?

Harvest Home Celebration

Tomorrow - Wednesday, November 20th - is our annual Harvest Home Celebration!  All 6th-12th graders are encouraged to join us at 6pm for a program celebrating all that God has done in the last year at Bayside followed by a wonderful home cooked holiday meal and pie!

It is our church's tradition that the youth serve the meal.  So we are asking all students to come help us serve.  Dress up in black pants and a white shirt and join us as we serve our church body and praise God for all that He does.

Be there at 6pm for a program in the sanctuary.  They will dismiss the youth first to get ready to serve and then we will help serve the plates and cut the pies.  It's going to be a fun night.  We hope you will join us!

Cell Phone Scavenger Hunt

Last night we had a blast at senior high youth group.  We started with a large game of 3-team bin ball.  Then we had a cell phone scavenger hunt.  We ended with having some prayer small groups.  Great night!

The cell phone scavenger hunt has become a favorite activity at our youth group.  As you can see above, Chandler and the girls were enjoying themselves.  This was the winning team from last night.  I will be posting more pictures later on.

Thanks for everyone that came last night.  Hope you all had a great time!

Beard - before and after

Many of you have made comments about my beard lately.  It wasn't planned out but for the last couple weeks I decided to grow a beard out.  Usually I do it once a year.  My tradition is shaving on Thanksgiving and then keeping a beard until after the new year.  I'll probably do that again this year, but for some reason felt like it was a good time to have a beard...until now.  I'm shaving it off this morning.

But since many of you have asked about it I thought I would show some before and after photos of me with a beard.  These pictures were not taken today but give you an idea of the difference between me with a beard and without.

I took this second picture about 30 minutes later.  I shaved my face as well as my head.  What do you think?

All I can say is, "Wow.  I had hair back then."

Throwback Thursday v. 8 - what?

In continuing our theme of old youth group photos for Throwback Thursday, here is a classic.  This picture is of Scott Paulson (currently one of our junior high youth leaders) with Shane McCotter (a former student in our youth group).  It is from the 2009 retreat at Storybook Lodge.

Scott and Shane were dressed up as cheerleaders for the Fluffy Noodle basketball game.  Don't ask any questions, just enjoy.

James

So far this school year we have been studying the book of James.  We have looked at the first few verses in James chapter 1.  Here's a review of verses 2-8:

Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.  And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.  If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.  But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind.  For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.

So if you have been coming to youth group and studying with us - what are your thoughts on these verses?  What are your questions?  How has this study been for you?  Make a comment on this post and share how you have experienced God's word through studying the book of James.

We will continue our study this week at youth group.  Hope to see you there!

First Day of School!

So today is the first day of school!  In some ways it is sad and we loathe the first day of school.  But at the same time it is an exciting time of year!

What is your favorite thing about school starting back up?  Or what is your least favorite thing about school starting back up?  Or maybe you have a story about the first day of school.  Post it in a comment, we'd love to hear.

Most of you know my favorite first day of school story.  I was a freshman in high school, just moved to a new city and it was my first day at a totally new school.  It was a big school too, about 2,000 students.  I knew no one, not one person!  I survived my first three classes but then...lunch!  I walked into the cafeteria where 1,000 students were busily greeting each other and talking about all the fun they had during the summer.  I looked for a seat and found an open spot on the far end of a table where a few girls were sitting.  My hope was to stay out of the way and figured I wouldn't bother them by sitting at the other side of their table.  Unfortunately, as soon as I sat down the girls all stood up, picked their lunch trays up and walked away!  It was the lowest feeling I have ever had!  I don't remember how I survived that day but eventually I made friends and "fit in" to my new school.  But it was the worst first day ever!

I hope you all have a better day today then I did in 1995!

Plans for June and July

Many of you have busy summers already scheduled.  Some of you have a summer job, some are doing ministry, some have vacations planned.  We also have 13 students going on a summer mission trip to Ukraine.  And several of you are signed up for Wood Lake Bible Camp.  Needless to say, it is already a busy busy summer!

At the same time the deacons and Pastor Mark have given me two months to take a sabbatical from full time church ministry.  A sabbatical is not a vacation, but more of a time to break from the normal schedule to plan and prepare for the future.  I will be taking this time during the months of June and July.

Because of all of that, we will not be having any official youth group activities during June and July.  If for some reason you have a need or issue arise you or your parents can contact the church office at 715-394-6002.  We have 4 youth leaders that will be "on call" during this time in case something should come up.  The church office will have their contact information if you would like to touch base with them.

Our target date for the JR HIGH (6th-8th) fall kickoff is Wednesday, September 11th.  And we are looking at starting SR HIGH (9th-12th) back up on Sunday night, August 18th.  More details coming later.

Check back to the blog in early August for updates and new plans or activities scheduled.  Until then...have a great summer!

Throwback Thursday volume 3

In continuing the fun tradition of old pictures on Thursday, I thought it would be fun to show some old pictures of our youth room.  The three below are from 2008.  Our youth room was revamped in the summer of 2009.

That's right we had some pretty crazy murals going.  And if you look closely at all three you will notice that in the picture above Luke and Ryan are sitting right under where our TV and system is now.

Big changes!
