Bayside Bowl Hall of Fame Induction

In case you missed it - at our recent Bayside Bowl X event we inducted our first ever entrant into the Bayside Bowl Hall of Fame.  After 10 years of football and youth group history, it was time for a hall of fame.  The first ever inductee into the Bayside Bowl Hall of Fame was Tommy Casper!

Tommy Casper played in five Bayside Bowls, including the first four.  He is a two-time Bayside Bowl Champion and a three-time Bayside Bowl MVP.  He is the only player to be given the MVP in a losing effort.
Tommy led the Nation of Domination to victory at the first ever Bayside Bowl.  Though his teams lost in the championship games of Bayside Bowls II and III, both games were lost in the final minutes.  It was at Bayside Bowl III that Tommy was voted MVP despite his team losing in the final moments of the game.
The Nation of Domination returned with a vengeance in Bayside Bowl IV, going undefeated and winning their second Bayside Bowl as Tommy was once again named MVP.
He returned once more in 2013 at Bayside Bowl VII but was unable to recapture the magic.  However, he will forever be remembered as the first star player of the Bayside Bowl and will go down in history as the first name ever written on the original Bayside Bowl trophy.

History - Bayside Bowl IX

Bayside Bowl IX was held on December 6, 2014.  This was a major change in the normal schedule as usually the tournament is played in January or February.  It was once again a Saturday afternoon, there were small traces of snow and the temperature was around 28 degrees.  Due to the conditions, scoring between the 4 teams competing was up this year.  The teams battled each other in the first round to set up a single elimination playoff.  The top 2 teams of the day survived and advanced to the championship game.  In the final game The Best Team in the World and Well Oiled Machine battled back and forth as the teams traded touchdowns and neither defense could make a stop.  Well Oiled Machine led by 7 going into the final minute of the game but The Best Team in the World scored a touchdown with 23 seconds remaining and converted for 2 points to take the lead, 36-35.  However, the Well Oiled Machine took the lead back on a touchdown catch by Anthony Severson with 14 seconds remaining.  It was Severson’s Bayside Bowl record 9th TD catch on the day.  The Best Team in the World dropped a pass in the endzone on the last play of the game.  Anthony Severson was named Most Valuable Player.

History - Bayside Bowl VII and Bayside Bowl VIII

Bayside Bowl VII was held on February 23, 2013.  The tournament returned to Saturday afternoon and there was lots of snow.  It was the warmest game time temperature in the history of the Bayside Bowl.  We also had the most teams and participants ever.  6 teams competed in a round robin first round and then a single elimination tournament.  In the championship game the defending champions Team Extreme defeated Christ’s Warriors 21-13.  Christ’s Warriors had led 13-0 at one point but Team Extreme came back with touchdowns to end the first half and begin the second half for a 15-13 lead.  Christ’s Warriors drove the length of the field but were denied a touchdown in the endzone in the last minute.  Casey Canfield then scored a full length of the field touchdown to seal the victory, it was his third touchdown of the game and he was selected as the Most Valuable Player.

Bayside Bowl VIII was held on February 22, 2014.  Once again it was held on a Saturday afternoon and there was the most snow in the history of the Bayside Bowl – over 30 inches!  Game time temperature was 14 degrees with considerable wind chills.  There were just three teams competing this year and the 2 time defending champions, Team Extreme, were the favorites.  However, the Well Oiled Machine were reborn in a new form and dominated the first round of play, earning the #1 seed and a bye into the championship game.  In the first round Team Extreme handled Rising Up to earn a matchup of former champions.  In the championship game the defending champions Team Extreme defeated the Well Oiled Machine 22-14.  In a back and forth game the teams traded touchdowns to open the game.   Team Extreme scored again and led 16-8.  Well Oiled Machine scored late to bring the game to 16-14 but failed on the 2-point conversion.  Team Extreme followed by running out the clock and scoring a touchdown by Scott Paulson on the final play.  It was Paulson’s third touchdown of the game and he was selected as MVP.

History - Bayside Bowl V and Bayside Bowl VI

Bayside Bowl V was held January 29, 2011.  Once again it was a Saturday afternoon, this time there was plenty of snow (about 15 inches) and the temp was 25 degrees.  We had three teams competing for the coveted Bayside Bowl trophy.  In the championship game Team Sparky defeated The Terminators 22-21 with a two-point conversion after a late touchdown.  Megan Tunell became the first ever female winner of the Bayside Bowl AND was selected as the MVP.

Bayside Bowl VI was held on January 29, 2012.  This was the first ever Bayside Bowl held on a Sunday.  There was about 3 inches of snow and the temp was 18 degrees.  We had 4 teams competing again this year and the most players in the history of the prestigious tournament.  In the championship game Team Extreme defeated the Stars 22-21.  The game was tied 8-8 and went into overtime.  Both teams scored on their first possession in OT to make it 15-15.  Team Extreme scored to make it 22-15 in the second OT.  Then the Stars scored to make it 22-21 and went for the 2-point conversion to win the game.  Team Extreme tackled them at the goal line to preserve a one-point victory.  Mike Casper was selected as the Most Valuable Player.

History - Bayside Bowl III and Bayside Bowl IV

Bayside Bowl III was on February 12, 2009. We had the most teams ever participating as 5 teams played on a day that was cold and icy. There was minimal snow and the temperature was 15 degrees. This year there were no first round games as it ended up being a double elimination tournament. Once again the Well Oiled Machine dominated play and earned its way back into the championship game, this time against the Saints. It was a close game but the Well Oiled Machine held the lead throughout the game. The Saints scored a late touchdown but failed the 2 point conversion and the Well Oiled Machine hung on to win 26-25. Tommy Casper was selected the Most Valuable Player in a losing effort as the Saints quarterback.

Bayside Bowl IV was on January 30, 2010. It was the first time the event was held on a Saturday. The temperature was 13 degrees and there was a small amount of snow. There were 4 teams competing and it marked the return of the Nation of Domination. In the first round the Nation returned with style, winning all three games. Once again they faced off against the Well Oiled Machine in the championship game. The Nation led throughout the game and held off a late comeback by the 2 time defending champions to win the game 36-32. Tommy Casper was once again selected as the Most Valuable Player.

History - Bayside Bowl I and Bayside Bowl II

Bayside Bowl I was on February 8, 2007. We had 3 teams battling for the new Bayside Bowl trophy. (The trophy was either a bowl or flower vase that I picked up from Goodwill for a total of 75 cents! But just imagine what it is worth now!) On that day the temperature was 13 degrees and there was very little amounts of snow. In the championship game the Nation of Domination defeated Well Oiled Machine by a score of 42-37. Well Oiled Machine had taken the lead on a touchdown and 2 point conversion with about 1 minute to go. However, the Nation scored on a long touchdown pass to win the game late. Tommy Casper was selected the Most Valuable Player.

Bayside Bowl II was on February 7, 2008. This year there were 4 teams participating, there was much more snow, and the temperature was 20 degrees. Both the defending champions Nation of Domination and Well Oiled Machine were returning. It was Well Oiled Machine that absolutely dominated the first round of games, winning all three games by a combined score of 53-0! They met up in the championship with the Nation of Domination once again. And it was another classic. The game ended up tied at 28-28. In overtime the Well Oiled Machine stopped the Nation on the first possession and then scored a touchdown to win 34-28. Tyler Tollefson was selected the Most Valuable Player.
